They Are Taking Over Ingenuity's Legacy
The SkyFall helicopters are like the next generation of the much-loved Ingenuity helicopter. Ingenuity made history as the first aircraft to fly on another planet. It was originally expected to make only five flights, but it surprised everyone by rising into the sky 72 times over almost three years. Sadly, one of its rotor blades was damaged during a flight, so it had to retire. Now SkyFall is getting ready to carry the mission forward.
Why Is Mars a Hard Place to Fly Helicopters?
On Earth, helicopters lift themselves by pushing against the air with their spinning blades. But Mars has a very thin atmosphere, which means there is much less air than we have on Earth. That makes it much harder for a helicopter to stay up. NASA engineers say SkyFall's rotors will need to spin much faster than helicopter blades on Earth. It is a bit like changing to a higher gear on a bicycle: it takes more energy and careful control.
What Will SkyFall Helicopters Do?
This team of three flying robots will collect data while flying close to the surface of Mars. One of their most important jobs will be searching for ice, or frozen water, hidden just under the ground. As you know, water is very important for life. If we can find water on Mars, it could be a big help for astronauts who may travel there in the future. The helicopters will also measure air temperature, wind speed, and wind direction. In a way, they will become Mars weather experts.

Gravity on Mars is much weaker than gravity on Earth. If you were standing there, you could jump much higher than you can at home. But Mars can also have powerful dust storms, so the helicopters need to be both very light and very strong.
Why Is This Mission Important?
There is a big difference between studying a planet from far away with telescopes and exploring it close to the ground. SkyFall helicopters could give scientists a bird's-eye view of places that are very hard to reach. These discoveries may help us understand our universe better and learn how humans might one day live on Mars.
