Natural History Subject is Coming!
If you have a passion for protecting nature, our planet, and learning about the natural world, a new school subject in England might be for you. The English government has started a 12-week consultation on a new Natural History GCSE.
What Will We Learn?
The Natural History subject will teach students about habitats and wildlife in England, the impact of humans on nature, climate change, conservation, and biodiversity loss. Students will also spend at least 20 hours learning outdoors and will record and analyze their findings in local areas, parks, forests, farmland, or beaches.
Why is This Subject Important?
The Natural History subject can prepare young people for green careers, which are jobs that help protect the environment and the natural world. Dr. Doug Gurr, Director of the Natural History Museum, said, 'We know there is a demand from young people and educators to learn more about nature.'
Did You Know?
The idea for the Natural History subject was first proposed in 2011 by environmental activist Mary Colwell and has been supported by many politicians. Many famous nature lovers have also supported this campaign. Steve Backshall, presenter of CBBC's Deadly 60 and a naturalist, said, 'Discovering the natural world is something every young person should experience.'
