Sea sponges are basically the ocean’s own vacuum cleaners! They sit on the bottom of the sea and pull in water, catching bits of food and trash as they go. Scientists are currently testing if these creatures can help clean up polluted water in places like busy ports and rivers. So, what exactly is a sea sponge? Even though they look like plants, they are actually soft, jelly-like animals. They don't have bones, a brain, or blood! Instead, they have tiny holes all over their bodies that suck in water. They keep the tasty food bits for themselves and push the water back out. As the water flows through, the sponge traps particles like algae, tiny plankton, and even bits of pollution. By doing this, they make the water much clearer for other sea animals. There are about 8,500 different types of sponges around the world! They come in every color of the rainbow and look like everything from fluffy clouds to tiny mushrooms. Sponges are super old, too. Fossils show they have been on Earth for more than 600 million years—way before dinosaurs! Because they are so simple, scientists think they might be the very first animal to ever live on Earth. In a recent test in Spain, researchers placed different types of sponges in a dirty port to see what would happen. Only one type, called the chicken-liver sponge, survived! Even though many didn't make it, scientists noticed that red starfish started showing up in the area afterward. Red starfish only live in clean water, so that was a great sign! Scientists are excited because sponges could be a natural way to clean up the ocean without using any harsh chemicals. We still have a lot to learn, like whether they can help remove things like oil or plastic, but the results so far are very promising. Did you know that just one sponge can filter up to 200 liters of water every single day? That is like cleaning a whole swimming pool in just a few hours! Scientists are busy asking big questions, such as if sponges could clean our local lakes or how we can keep them safe from pollution. If we can use these little helpers to clean the water, it means more safety for fish, dolphins, and the plants that live in the sea.
