Release of Wild Boars
Over 40 rare wild boars have been released into the ancient forests of Leicestershire. This release, organized by the People's Trust for Endangered Species (PTES), aims to increase the population of wild boars and prevent their extinction. The number of wild boars has decreased by over 70% in the UK since 2000.Habitat of Wild Boars
The wild boars will find a new home in Bradgate Park Trust. Last year, 21 wild boars were released here. The previously released wild boars formed the only known population in Leicestershire, and this year 11 piglets were recorded in August and 15 in September.Conservation Efforts
Ian White, PTES's wild boar and education officer, said, 'The number of wild boars has decreased due to habitat loss, poor forest and fence management, and climate change. These numbers are very worrying, but our reintroduction program, combined with habitat restoration, forest management, and monitoring, gives this endangered species a real chance of recovery.'Pre-Release Preparation
Before being released, the wild boars will be kept in nest boxes to help them adapt to the forest. These wild boars were mostly bred by the Wildwood Trust as part of the reintroduction program. The trust said it had its most successful breeding season this year.Health Check
All the animals underwent a full health check to ensure they are healthy and do not carry any diseases, and were quarantined for 4 weeks. Then, they were released in pairs into nest boxes. For 10 days, they will stay in mesh cages with natural light and leaves to help them adapt to the forest.Future of Wild Boars
The release of wild boars is an important step in conserving this species. It is crucial for people to respect nature and protect the habitats of wild boars for their future. Protecting wild boars is not only important for their survival but also for maintaining the balance of nature. Did you know? Wild boars are a protected species in the UK.
