Dimorphos and Didymos

In September 2022, the DART spacecraft intentionally crashed into a small asteroid called Dimorphos. Dimorphos is an asteroid that orbits a larger asteroid called Didymos. These two asteroids form a binary system, which was chosen because its movement is easy to track.

First Observations

Initial observations showed that the crash shortened Dimorphos' orbit around Didymos by about 32 minutes. Part of this change was due to the crash itself, and the rest was due to a cloud of rocks and dust that was thrown out from the asteroid.

Newer analysis revealed an additional effect. A study published in Science Advances in March 2026 found that the crash also slightly changed the path of the system around the Sun. The change is very small - about 1.7 inches (4.3 cm) per hour - but small changes in space can add up over time. This is the first time scientists have measured a real change in an object's path around the Sun.

The lead author of the study, Rahil Makadia, says, 'These results show that we can now confidently say we can push asteroids.'
