In the animal world, sometimes we meet creatures that make us stare in disbelief. Here comes the new record holder: Hugo! Hugo is a four‑year‑old Shire horse living in Northamptonshire, England. What makes him special is not just his height, but also that his growing phase hasn’t finished yet. He is now 199 cm tall, which is 19.2 hands high.

What are Shire horses and why are they so big? Shire horses are the world’s tallest horses. Throughout history, these horses have been used to carry heavy loads and pull carts because of their huge bodies and amazing muscle power. They are the “strong giants” of the horse world. A Shire horse can easily pull more than a person thanks to its muscle power. But unlike his strength, Hugo is known to be very gentle and kind.

A baby that keeps growing! Hugo’s owner Brett Masters says he never imagined Hugo would grow so much when he adopted him at 18 months old. Hugo is now four years old, and horses usually reach full maturity at eight or nine years old. That means Hugo will grow even taller in the next three or four years! Veterinarians give him a special feeding plan to keep him healthy, regularly check his teeth, and even get a special physiotherapist to give him massages. Hugo is living a five‑star life, we can say.

- Horses use a special unit called “hand” to measure height. One hand is about 10 centimeters. So Hugo is just over 19 hands tall!
- Hugo officially has the Guinness World Record for the tallest horse. When measuring, they remove the horses’ shoes (horseshoes) to see the real height.
- Shire horses were chosen in the Middle Ages because they were strong enough to carry knights’ armor.

Hugo’s daily life
Hugo is not just big. He’s also very social! When his owner takes him out, everyone stops in amazement and watches him, filming videos. His owner says he’s like a big dog, very soft‑hearted and gentle. People are amazed by his size, but Hugo just wants a little attention and maybe a carrot!

Why is it important?
Hugo’s story reminds us how different and special animals can be. Nature can create creatures in sizes we can’t even imagine. Also, when we take good care of an animal (healthy food, regular check‑ups), it can be happy and peaceful. Hugo is a great example of how gentle a giant can be.
