A unique floating reef has been built on the water in Glenarm Marina, Northern Ireland. This is the first floating reef in Ireland and provides a home for thousands of young oysters. The project was created by the conservation group Ulster Wildlife, which is working to bring back European flat oysters. These oysters used to be common in coastal areas but their numbers have dramatically decreased due to overfishing, pollution, disease, and habitat loss. The floating reef is home to around 10,000 baby oysters and 200 adult oysters. Oysters are filter feeders, which means they help improve water quality by filtering the water as they eat. Oyster reefs provide a habitat for many other marine animals and increase biodiversity. The new floating reef is designed to mimic a natural reef and provides a safe space for oysters to grow and breed. The project is still in its early stages, but the initial results are promising, with over 80% of the oysters surviving. Scientists have installed an underwater camera system to monitor the reef and have recorded over 7,000 observations of wild animals interacting with the reef in just three months.
