How Do You Get to School?

Do you walk, cycle, use a scooter, or take a car or bus to school? The UK government wants more kids to travel to school actively. Active travel means walking, cycling, or using a scooter.

The Government's Goal

The government's latest data shows that less than half of kids aged 5-16 walk or cycle to school. Their new plan aims for at least 60% of kids to walk or cycle to school within the next 10 years.

How Will It Happen?

To make this happen, the government plans to build 5,000 new walking, cycling, and scooter paths and 10,000 safer crossings by 2030. They will also spend £135 million to help kids learn to walk or cycle safely in traffic.

Why Is It Important?

Transport Minister Heidi Alexander said, 'Many people want to walk, cycle, or scooter more often, but they can't find safe and suitable options.' She also said, 'This is about creating healthier communities.' It's not just about getting to school. The government also wants more adults to walk, cycle, or scooter for short trips in cities and towns by 2035.

Other Regions

This plan only applies to England. Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland have different transport rules, so they are not included in this plan.

What Do You Think?

How do you get to school? Would you like to walk, cycle, or scooter more often? Do you feel safe? Can the government's plan change the way kids get to school?
