Modern crocodiles are strong, heavy reptiles that spend a lot of time on riverbanks, waiting to ambush their prey. But their ancient relatives looked very different. Sonselasuchus cedrus, a recently discovered crocodile species, lived around 215 million years ago during the Late Triassic Period. It was only 25 inches (64 cm) long, about the size of a standard poodle. Instead of teeth, it had a sharp, toothless beak for cutting food. Its large eye sockets suggested strong eyesight. Its hollow, lightweight bones were designed for sprinting on land, not swimming. Scientists think S. cedrus lived in lush forests, not in muddy rivers or swamps. The most surprising thing about S. cedrus was how it moved as it grew older. Young individuals probably walked on all fours, while adults walked on two legs. This was never seen before in ancient crocodiles. The discovery was published in the Journal of Vertebral Paleontology in March 2026, led by Elliot Armour Smith from the University of Washington. The study was based on around 950 fossils found in a bone bed in Arizona's Petrified Forest National Park. The fossils included remains of at least 36 individuals of different ages, allowing the team to study how the animals changed as they grew. The area also contained fossils of ancient fish, amphibians, dinosaurs, and other reptiles. Researchers think these animals may have gathered around a drying water source during a severe drought. S. cedrus is an interesting discovery that helps us understand how ancient crocodiles lived and moved. It can inspire kids to explore the natural world and get interested in science. By learning more about these fascinating creatures, kids can learn more about nature and science.
